CAPE TOWN — It’s official: Cape Town has been named the world’s best city in 2025. A place where innovation meets culture, where history dances with modernity, and where the mountains, oceans, and cityscape merge to create an unparalleled experience.
As I stood before one of the city’s striking buildings post-workout, the crisp morning air carried a sense of clarity. The moment was layered with personal reflection — of resilience, recovery, and readiness for what’s ahead. Exactly a year ago, I faced a major setback: an accidental hip injury that impacted my spine and altered the trajectory of my physical health. But setbacks, as I’ve come to understand, are often setups for something greater.
The city, with all its vibrancy, also serves as a mirror — a reminder of the need to recalibrate, to seek balance, and to embrace a life that thrives. And so, from the heart of Cape Town, I’m sharing a holistic call to action: “Embrace S.L.E.E.P.”— a blueprint for mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
The hidden crisis: A generation at risk
Even as Cape Town basks in its latest accolade, a deeper concern looms over not just this city, but the world at large. The latest Mental State World Report from Sapien Labs paints a stark picture: mental health among youth is in rapid decline.
Cognitive and social challenges have surged, driven by three key factors:
- Social disconnection — a world where digital interactions replace meaningful human connections.
- Excessive smartphone use — where constant stimulation erodes attention spans and deep thinking.
- Modern lifestyle pressures — an endless pursuit of productivity that often sacrifices well-being.
These challenges are particularly pressing in Africa, a continent where the youth population is booming. This young, dynamic generation represents immense potential — but only if we nurture minds that are resilient, empowered, and prepared to thrive.
So how do we counteract this crisis? How do we reclaim mental clarity, physical vitality, and a deep sense of purpose?
It starts with an intentional shift. It starts with S.L.E.E.P.
Embrace S.L.E.E.P.: A call to action for thriving
At its core, S.L.E.E.P. is not just about rest — it’s about recalibration. It stands for:
- Stress management: Mastering techniques to ease daily pressures.
- Longevity: Pursuing a lifestyle that nurtures lasting health.
- Exercise: Keeping the body in motion for vibrancy and vitality.
- Enablement: Driving positive change and empowering those around us.
- Productivity: Unlocking full potential and making every moment count.
To make this actionable, here are four strategies to start implementing today:
- Manage stress with micro-recoveries
Stress is unavoidable, but how we respond to it makes all the difference. Research shows that micro-recoveries — short, intentional pauses throughout the day — can prevent burnout and improve cognitive function.
Actionable tip: Schedule five-minute recovery moments between meetings or deep work. A simple breathwork exercise, a quick outdoor walk, or even closing your eyes for a mental reset can shift your state of mind dramatically.
- Prioritise longevity with strategic sleep and nutrition
Longevity isn’t just about living longer — it’s about living well. The two most underestimated pillars of longevity? Sleep and nutrition. A well-rested mind makes better decisions, while nutrient-rich foods fuel cognitive function.
Actionable tip: Establish a non-negotiable nighttime routine — no screens 30 minutes before bed, a wind-down ritual like journaling, and a consistent sleep schedule. For nutrition, consider anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric, berries, and Omega-3-rich fish to support brain health.
- Move for mental clarity
Exercise is often framed as a tool for physical fitness, but its mental benefits are equally powerful. A simple morning movement routine can enhance focus, creativity, and overall emotional resilience.
Actionable tip: Incorporate three types of movement daily — aerobic (brisk walk, cycling), strength (bodyweight exercises, resistance training), and mobility (stretching, yoga). Start with five minutes if time is tight; consistency is more important than intensity.
- Shift from hustle to enablement
Our culture glorifies the hustle, but true success comes from enablement — helping others rise while sustaining our own well-being. Leadership in the modern world isn’t about working harder; it’s about working smarter and with purpose.
Actionable tip: Practice “Essentialism” — ask yourself daily: What is the highest-impact thing I can do today? Then, focus only on that. Cut out the noise, delegate, and create space for deep work and deep rest.
A personal reminder: Strength, resourcefulness, and bravery
Recently, I had the privilege of meeting Professor Yael Grushka-Cockayne, whose name in Hebrew embodies three powerful qualities: strength, resourcefulness, bravery
These words stayed with me, serving as a reminder — not just of who I am, but of what is unfolding.
As I stood, post-workout, refueling with a warm breakfast at The Westin, three other words came to mind: Sports, Wellness, and Longevity. More than just concepts, these are the pillars of a journey that is about to unfold. A journey shaped by visionary leaders, bold thinkers, and a commitment to human flourishing.
The path forward: Reclaiming what matters
The crisis in mental health, the pressures of modern life, and the distractions of the digital age are undeniable. But within every challenge lies an opportunity — a chance to recalibrate, to shift perspective, and to take action.
Because in the end, how we choose to see the journey will always shape its outcome.
