The Edo State House of Assembly has issued an impeachment notice to Philip Shaibu, the state’s deputy governor, on the charges of perjury and revealing confidential information about the state government.
Charity Aiguobarueghian, the House Majority Leader, officially announced the impeachment notice during a plenary session of the House. He stated that the notice, dated March 5, was signed by 21 of the 24 House members.
“The petition against the deputy governor came in on March 5 and was signed by 21 out of the 24 members. The number of members who signed the petition was more than the two-third requirement stipulated in the constitution,” he said.
In response to the impeachment notice, Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the House, acknowledged receipt of the petition and directed Yahaya Omogbai, the House Clerk, to serve Shaibu with the notice. Agbebaku also gave the deputy governor seven days to respond to the notice and defend himself against the allegations.
The impeachment notice is the latest development in the ongoing conflict betweenGodwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Tensions between the two have been high since last year, when Shaibu publicly announced his ambitions to run for governor of the state.
