Once upon a time, in the garden of the mind, a unique story unfolded. It all began early in the week at the Africa Health event, held at the grand Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, South Africa. Like seeds sown in fertile soil, attendees gathered, each with their thoughts and intentions, as the event unfolded.
After a day filled with inspiration and knowledge, I found myself in the parking area, ready to depart. As I maneuvered my vehicle, a shuttle bus, the size of a giant tree in this mental garden, slowly approached. Following the unwritten rules of South Africa, I knew that I should yield to the bus, giving way to international delegates on board.
In this tranquil mental garden, roads symbolized the paths of life. The principle of reciprocity, like the give-and-take of nature, played out as I allowed the shuttle bus to pass. Then, as a fragrant breeze of frustration wafted through the scene, a new element appeared.
A woman’s vehicle, akin to a weed among the flowers, pulled up behind me, obstructing my path. Surprise grew like a vine in my mind. I decided to reverse; my hope to let her pass as gracefully as a river flowing around an obstacle. But alas, her response was not in harmony with the serenity of the garden.

In this garden of thoughts, where one could choose to nurture kindness, she chose to cultivate anger. Rolling down her window, she hurled her discontent at me, igniting the flames of road rage. She said, “I could wait here all day.”
My response, like a beam of sunlight cutting through the stormy clouds, was to attempt to quell the anger. I implored, “Can we not nurture peace in this garden and continue our journey? After all, I’ve already granted you the path.”
The onlookers, seated along the mental sidewalks of the Gallagher Convention Centre, represented the audience to this unfolding drama. They witnessed the exchange of negative thoughts, much like watching a weed attempting to choke out the surrounding flowers. Amusement filled the air, as they recognized the absurdity of the situation in this garden of the mind.
This story serves as a reminder that our minds are the gardens of our thoughts, where we can choose to sow seeds of kindness or allow weeds of negativity to grow. The choice is ours, and the fruits of our thoughts will be shared with the world, just as the flowers in a garden share their beauty with all who pass by. Let me leave you with three reflections
1. IN THE GARDEN OF OUR MINDS our thoughts are the seeds we plant, and our reactions determine if they grow into vibrant flowers or invasive weeds. It’s our choice to nurture positivity and kindness, even in the face of negativity.
2. THE ROADS OF LIFE are filled with unexpected obstacles, but it’s our response that truly defines the journey. Choosing to sow the seeds of understanding and patience can lead to a more peaceful and harmonious path.
3. JUST AS THOSE BYSTANDERS at the Gallagher Convention Centre watched the unfolding drama with amusement, we, too, have the power to rise above negativity and find humour in life’s challenges. After all, in the garden of the mind, laughter can be the most beautiful flower of all.
Let us embrace the wisdom of this story and make a conscious choice to cultivate a garden of positive thoughts, nurturing kindness, and patience in our daily lives. The next time we encounter obstacles on the road of life, let us remember the power of our reactions and choose the path of peace and understanding. Together, we can create a more harmonious world, one thought at a time.
